Did you know our precious theater was built in 1946? It’s a post-WWII behemoth that has sat at 3524 Greenville Avenue for a long time now. We constantly hear stories from crowds of all ages about them or their parents and grandparents seeing a movie when they were younger. It’s wonderful neighborhood press that we take to heart. East Dallas is a tightknit community and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Getting bigger press, however, takes a lot of work and research. That work paid off for 2016 and 2017 as we were lucky enough to be featured in some notable publications. To start, Southwest Airlines featured us as one of, “The 10 Best Places to See Live Music” and we were placed among some stellar company: Bluegrass Underground (McMinnville, TN) Masonic Ampitheatre (Clifton Forge, VA) The Rave (Milwaukee, WI) and even Red Rocks (Morrison, CO). We were beyond honored – heck, to be mentioned in the same breath as Red Rocks alone was incredible.
GuideLive, the dedicated entertainment wing of The Dallas Morning News, has worked with us on numerous festivities but they were the first to break Willie Nelson’s back-to-back-concerts . The response was overwhelming! Working in the office that day was interesting…the day was filled with phone calls. Some nice, others not so much. The show review showcased what Trigger and Willie brought to our stage both nights. While we had known the Red Headed Stranger was due for a visit months before, it was fascinating to see the immediate response. They also broke the story that a part Willie’s two-night stay was featured in his recent music video!
Sundown at Granada, the theater’s restaurant next door, has been in the press a few times as well. Since Executive Chef Jason West has taken over, the menu has changed seasonally with new and exciting dishes to match. It’s the dedication to his craft and overall love of food (Louisiana/Cajun especially) that has helped him earn nods as one of the city’s up-and-coming chefs, including “Rising Star Chef” (CultureMap Tastemaker Awards). One of the restaurant’s staples, the Veggie Burger, has been a longtime hit. The Dallas Observer had very kind things to say naming it one of “10 vegetarian burgers in Dallas that are downright delicious.”
Sundown does a lot more than just provide delicious farm-to-table fare out of our little East Dallas nook. We like to host neighborhood-friendly events, too. Drive up and down Lower Greenville and you’ll notice Sundown’s sprawling patio nestled next to the historic Granada Theater. It is, in our totally unbiased opinion, the best patio with the best views. Want a picture of the theater’s iconic marquee? You barely have to move. Dallas Observer knows what we’re talking about! Our patio isn’t the only outside space that offers picturesque views of the neighborhood – the rooftop is home to the weekly Movie Series and special screenings, including popular television shows. One such show that’s quite popular is The Bachelorette. The creative minds at Granada decided to make a fun watch party out of it with bingo games, Rose specials and a visit from the Bachelorette herself. See for yourself with the recap from our friends at the Observer.
