In the decade-long span of his career, Cass McCombs has remained under the radar. When listening to McCombs’ records we find ourselves asking, who exactly is Cass McCombs? Depicting personal tales or fictional stories, the element of curiosity comes innately. Each of McCombs’ albums trigger concepts that engulf and fascinate the artist’s mind: everywhere between California and loneliness, McCombs channels the singer-songwriter passion oftentimes defined by Elliott Smith or Nick Drake.
In a note written to Stereogum, McCombs wrote, “I know people get lonely because I do, so that’s what I end up writing songs about, how you get lonely sometimes and come up with these big ideas that give you meaning for a second but then leave you like everything else leaves you.” Though pessimistic, there are truths underlying this philosophy. Though McCombs remains a bit of a mystery, what is sung, intentional or not, is sung for you.
Cass McCombs will open up for Austinites White Denim this Friday, April 4th. Presented by KXT 91.7 and Gorilla vs. Bear, we’re ecstatic for this solid bill. Here’s to the heartbreaks.
