On April 5th, Booker T, legend of soul music, will be playing live here at the Granada Theater. And I’ll be straight up-and-down with you, though famous for his work Booker T & the M.G.’s, his new material is really incredible! Which figures, since this is the man that made the classic hit Green Onions – one of the most timeless and recognizable songs of all time. His recent accolades include being inducted in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys.
His newest album, Sound the Alarm marks his return to Stax Records, and features guest appearances from young artists like Estelle, Raphael Saadiq, Anthony Hamilton, Mayer Hawthorne and also features fellow legends Sheila E. and Gary Clark Jr. The album’s a brilliant marriage of Booker T‘s vintage soul sound with modern hip hop samples and beats. It’s great to see a classic artist do such a fresh and interesting update on their sound… And to do it well. I mean, really well. The album has the amazing ability of feeling really nostalgic but also current. It almost sounds like an album a DJ would make, using samples from silky-smooth 60’s records. It reminds me of Madlib‘s amazing Shades of Blue album, that used samples from the Blue Note catalog of blues songs. Booker T‘s new material has the same vibe, and his show is totally going to be an amazing one!
