It’s 100 degrees outside but it’s Christmas in July at the Granada Theater. A major change has occurred; a brand new air conditioning system has been installed inside the historic venue. “We’re really excited to have a brand new system installed in the building and it will make all our events an even better experience”, said Mike Schoder; owner of the the Granada Theater. “We had 50 tons and now will have 100 tons to keep us cool while we are getting our boogie on to some great live music.”
With much cooler temperatures on the inside, the staff decided to throw a Christmas in July party, starring EELS and The Submaries. EELS, fronted by Mark Oliver Everett has had songs featured in several movies including American Beauty, Scream 2, Knocked Up and the first three Shrek movies. This past June at the Norwegian Wood Festival in Oslo, Norway, EELS was asked by Ringo Starr to perform the Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends” along with Edgar Winter and Little Steven. Mark is also the author of the well aclaimed book “Things the Grandchildren Should Know“, which is also the title of the EELS song from their 2006 album “Blinking Lights and Other Revelations”. Starting out as solo artists, John Dragonetti and Blake Hazard, met through a mutual friend and began touring as The Submaries. After four years as a couple, the pair broke up but continued writing songs and eventually reconciled due to the fact that they realized the songs they had written were about each other. Two of their songs “You, Me and the Bourgeoisie” and “Submarine Symphonika” were both used in Apple commercials. Hazard is also the great-granddaughter of American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Expect to see Santa and his elves at the show. They will handing out presents to some of the lucky guests including tickets to future show at the Granada Theater and gift certificates from Lower Greenville area businesses.
